Western Atlantic
The recent earthquake in Haiti has aroused great public interest in the country. This is the second largest natural disaster to hit disaster-prone country, and the fourth since the beginning of this century. Therefore, most of the media has focused on the impact of the disaster relief efforts, aid international, and similar topics.
There is a Haiti that exists beyond natural disasters, political instability, extreme poverty, degradation the environment, and violence. Haiti has a long history. Haiti occupies the western third of the island of Spanish. The Taino Indians occupied the island until the arrival Europeans in the late 15th century. The Spanish, led by Christopher Columbus, were the first to arrive in Haiti in 1492. Columbus claimed the island for Spain.
The Spanish indiscriminate exploitation of the island for its gold. After the arrival of Europeans, indigenous to the island, population suffered near extinction, probably the worst case of depopulation in the United States. The French were the next to arrive in Haiti. We first established a settlement on the island in 1625. There were numerous battles between the French and Spanish for control of the island, until the treaty of Ryswick, 1697, when the Spanish ceded the western third of the island to the French.
During this time, the island's economy grew and became one of the largest colonies of 18th century French empire. Around 790,000 African slaves provided the labor for the plantations of France this time, and at that time represented a third of the Atlantic slave trade.
In 1804, Haiti has fought and won independence from its French masters. He became the oldest black republic and the second oldest republic in the hemisphere after the U.S. West. The period until 1911 was marked by growth and development. The monetary reform was a cultural renaissance with a flourish Haitian art.
Since 1911, Haiti has experienced political instability and unrest. Between 1957 and 1986 under Duvalier and his son, the country experienced the most repressive and corrupt dictatorship of modern times. Subsequent governments have been unable to stop the violence and unrest in the country.
