Why trees Break
Codominant stems can form narrow branch crotch angles, which eventually develop included bark and become a weak point in the tree. Lack of training of trees when they are young and often can lead to large branch failure as the tree matures. By not buy in the nursery trees that have been unduly shaped (or covered) by the nursery, we can, a nursery on a moment change the number of trees grown in the wholesale level.
Topped trees are bad. Simple statement, but if you look at some of the nurseries that occurs at present, many small trees at one time were "topped" or pinched in an effort to produce a fuzzy ball of leaves of a slender stick of a tree. This always results in codominant trees with multiple stems emanating from a very small area of the trunk.
Severe pruning to correct this condition is the only hope the young tree to be strong to survive, either as an old tree. When I see these trees planted in the backyard of my clients, discuss the need to start training of these trees early. Usually, only takes a few minutes per tree to make a difference that will last a lifetime.
Courts branch collar are important. Although I have seen an improvement in tree work in the past 30 years in central Texas, I think most people still do not know how one codominant stem cut properly. While even Dr. Shigo admits that there is a clear space in the trunk or perfect mother or father for the codominant stem cut properly, I see too many cuts codominant mother after being closer to the color cuts properly made cuts codominant mother. .
When one of the projects in the fact that as more and more away at the top of any tree, each branch becomes the equivalent of a codominant trunk, you have a problem. When the branch is horizontal, the upward and downward movement of the branch in the wind causes the crack to extend lengthwise from top to bottom the length of the limb. As this occurs, the simple physics involved. One area of tension develops in the upper extremity (the tissue pulled apart) and cracks and a corresponding area of compression (the tissue is compressed) forms in the lower extremity. Gravity, a constant 24 to 7, eventually pulling that member completely from the tree. This is the "phenomenon" of falling limbs summer. I've seen it happen only once in 30 years and have heard happens twice. It sounds pretty dramatic and go like a deer rifle.
Dr. Shigo once challenged me (over 20 years) to dissect the branches which was watching trees falling in the middle of summer, without apparent wind load. For more than a year, I dissected longitudinally all members who had to recover "mysteriously" fallen "Customer trees. In 58 of the 60 dissections, I have found old clippings of color or the old wounds have caused a crack longitudinal, which in turn became the cause of the insufficiency of the extremities. Most of the injured were 20 to 30 years old at the time and most had completely sealed over. From the ground, there would have been little or no visible signs of impending failure, unless sealed by the presence of color cuts. (Courts Flush were once the industry standard for over 30 years. Most mature trees are currently working color cuts are probably hidden somewhere instead of its cover.)
Small cuts of color in small or young trees - they have a difference? Only time will tell. You must be very care to make other cuts of real branch collar cuts in trees. The legal profession is becoming more and more educated about how trees together and why trees fall apart. Do not let a lawsuit to find 20 years after the fact, since making the wrong pruning cuts.
