How likely am I to get MRSA if I share a tractor trailer with someone who has it?
This person has had it numerous times in the past few years and I have been sharing the truck for a few months. As far as I know don't have it, yet.
MRSA is nothing more than a modern variant of an age-old simple staph skin infection called impetigo. Kids get this all of the time. You see them with “honey-crusted” little sores most commonly on the face. It’s usually self-limited though antibiotics are a quite reasonable option – especially with MRSA which is just a form of staph that has developed resistance to many antibiotics.
It is very contagious – because kids are dirty little buggers by their nature.
However I disagree with previous poster that your risk is high. Just use good “standard cleanliness” precautions as that poster outlined and your risk should actually be quite low.
Of note: People with chronic re-infection are usually “nasal carriers” of staph.
For whatever reason some folks harbor this bacteria chronically in their nose – and standard oral antibiotics don’t eliminate this.
This “carriage state” can be eliminated by intranasal use of a specific ointment medication called Bactroban which is highly active against MRSA. The ointment is applied inside both nostrils 2x/day x5 days.
Recolonization will usually occur somewhere down the line – but recurrent infections will often be limited or absent for a number of months.
