Scene Master
The movie Psycho directed by Alfred Hitchcock, contains perhaps the most famous scenes in film history. Janet Leigh, the star of the picture, is undress and get into the shower. The film cuts to shots of the shower, the water that runs down the drain and Janet Leigh behind the shower curtain. A dark figure is crawling toward her, and as the shower curtains are torn, we hear screaming, Janet Leigh, the attacker produced a knife and the sounds of violins can be heard screeching as the heroine meets her unfortunate fate.
There are a number of reasons why this scene is so well remembered. The controversial nature of the scene and the effect it had on viewers Conservatives in 1960, is perhaps the biggest reason for the fame of this scene. To give you an idea of how this culture looked at the film, note that this was the first mainstream film to contain a shot of a toilet! Then you can get an idea of how people would feel to see a woman with a fastener, to undress and get into a shower in a Hollywood movie. He added that the impact of seeing his murder!
Hitchcock, creator of the film with the goal of making something that looked a lot more crude than the films of his audience was accustomed to seeing. He chose the film black and white, it was rare for the time, and edited together in a way that had a much faster rate than what is considered the norm.
The structuring This scene was Hitchcock many months to complete, and will work closely with every shot, and how the shooting would be edited together before firing a single minute film. This allowed him to cut so that the scene is regarded as much more explicit in the public mind, as indeed if the film is slow at all times to see frame by frame.
But what perhaps caused the greatest impact among the public to see the film first was how Hitchcock had developed Janet Leigh's character, until that time. Janet Leigh was announced as the star of this movie, and was treated as the main character until the shower scene. However, This scene is only half of the movie! Thus, together with the shock of seeing a murder occurs on the screen, the audience is surprised that the hero of the film has been murdered before the story had found any kind of resolution.
While Hitchcock's films always represent a vision a so disconnected from reality, there can be no doubt that he was a virtuoso master at manipulating public emotions. The famous shower scene in this film is a testimony to this fact, and no wonder it became one of the most popular, often-parodied and often-taught scenes in the history of film. While some today are reluctant to see old movies, especially black and white, Psycho worth a watch just so you can learn about this milestone in cinema.
