Northern Pacific
Is it really true that an average Pacific, Mikado, or even North did not develop much more horsepower?
Compared with its modern Dash 8 or newer diesel?
That depends. There are, of course, the variables involved. The engines that have referred to was eclipsed at the start tractive effort by SD40 even the first generation, or even a couple of venerable F7s. Pacific were designed primarily for passenger service and are pretty mediocre as far as it relates to statistics. The largest of these and was bought by Baldwin in 1928 with a total weight of 313,800 pounds. and boasting 45,850 ft Ib tensile stress, compared with 105,000 for the SD40 humble. The "Mikes" sub-were classified as "light" or "heavy" under USRA (the precursor to FRA) specifications. North were equally at home in freight or passenger service and were quite sturdy animals. The heaviest This class was purchased outside of Lima in 1942 with a total weight of 483,200 pounds. and 78,650 ft / lbs. starting effort. Moreover, most of this class feature with "S. booster" This was a two-cylinder power in the final truck fire box and produced an additional 13,000 ft / lbs. much needed torque at startup. Thus, these machines are totally eclipsed by the time the second generation of diesel-electric started plying the rails of the USA. Good question.
