Use of unleaded petrol in vintage cars
In one of the sites of old cars were sites belonging to a member who shared an interesting experience for the forum. Below is the Readers Digest version.
The new owner (we'll call John) had seen his dream vintage car announced on the same website mentioned above. John liked what he saw, and it helped that many forum members validated that the car was good. John set up an appointment for testing the car. When John arrived the car was even more handsome than the photos shown. The owner decided that John was a serious buyer and not a "tire kicker". He decided to take the car for a test drive. The car started on the first lap of the key, stopped with no problems and ran perfectly. The homeowner John back on the return trip. And while John was taking it easy, was able to get the tires to sing easily in 2nd and 3rd place.
John bought the car, loaded it up in his trailer, and now the proud owner of a beautiful 1970 Nova Super Sport. Since the car was almost perfect and needs no work, John started driving a couple of local car cruises and classic car shows to get an idea of the car.
The car show day, is about an hour and a half away. After waxing the car, and control of fluids, John filled the gas tank. A mile down the road John stopped at a light red. When the green light, turned, and heard a light knocking / pinging noise on acceleration. The noise grew louder the longer they took the car. The only Once John heard was noise on acceleration. If he was driving the car "easy" it was an egg under the accelerator pedal, the table was almost nonexistent and tolerable. If I had to pass another vehicle and was required to accelerate, the noise got worse, and the engine did not have the same power as their first test. Other than the noise, the car worked perfectly. John was driving in the series, but I was really anxious and nervous because I thought I had bought a lemon. And it was a camper happy.
Long story short, some people reading stories of John began to question him. A group of them even made a special trip to the home of John to take a test drive with John to see if they could determine what was happening. During the discussion of those present asked John what changes introduced in the car since buying it. John said: "I did not touch anything except to wash, wax, and I filled the gas tank. The passerby said, "I'm going to jump from here, "then asked" what kind of gas you put in it?
Let me move faster in history and explain why this is so important.
High performance cars from the 60s and 70s require high performance gasoline. Unless the engine has been modified, pre-1971 cars require high octane leaded gasoline to operate properly. Because leaded gasoline is no longer sold in the United States, the Owners of these types of vehicles purchased to replace lead additives (about $ 2 - $ 5 per bottle). A bottle is usually good for a tank of gas. Lead is fundamental, because it acts as a lubricant for internal engine parts and prevents wear prematurely. Engines built in 1971 and later are designed to work with unleaded gas, so adding replace lead is not necessary. In fact, the damage of lead catalysts, which are required in cars built after 1977 and is more damaging to the environment. Adding a lead additive to a pre-1971 engine literally prevent the engine from hitting until death.
John's experience is something that happens to many owners of vintage cars. The reason for the great Nova ran with the previous owner was because they used a petrol of 92 octane and added a bottle to replace the lead with each tank. When John filled the tank of gas is used the same 87 octane level of gasoline you use for your controller everyday. He never gave any thought that the kind of gas was on. Most people do not buy old cars gas mileage and the reasons economy. Therefore, it only took a couple of weekends in the local driving before John needed to fill your gas tank again. Now, the engine was outside their "design point", which means it was not designed to run on low octane unleaded fuel. Ping engine and began beating with a load as soon as the new gas was burned.
When John told his story in the forum, there were about a quarter of a tank of gas economy left. He added a bottle of octane booster, a bottle of lead substitute, and fill the rest of the gas tank of 92 octane premium. Since then, John's car has been running to perfection.
An original 70 before the engine has not been modified for unleaded fuel will need a little help in the gas department. Always use the highest octane possible. A bottle of good memories octane lead replacement and help maximize performance and engine longevity. You should buy the gas octane high as possible because a high octane prevents knocking and pinging. Supreme unleaded (92 octane) is fine and should be used for most of the motors and driving daily.
Owners of high performance engines for real, which means a higher compression ratio to 10.0:1, you must use an octane booster for keep their engines running smoothly. Octane boosters also help if you race the car occasionally or when you want a little more power. Remember, racing fuel in the category of 104 octane or higher is costly and sometimes difficult to find.
Racing fuel should only be used if you really have a engine built for racing and is overkill for a street car.
