Universal Wrecking Corp. complete demolition of fire damaged Fund
Universal Wrecking Corp., a premier demolition, recycling and scrap demolition contractor that operates on a national basis, has recently completed the last phase of the demolition of a manufacturing plant and department stores in Pennsylvania.
After a major fire severely damaged a large part of this million square foot Universal Wrecking Corp. (UWC) was awarded the first phase of the project was to perform emergency services for demolition. UWC was hired to remove the building collapsed bays and clean debris from the fire damaged and steel members. This should be done with controlled demolition to preserve the structures and bays that were designated to be saved.
Before demolition activities, an environmental study was conducted along with a review of existing documentation of the client in asbestos materials (ACM) and other materials hazards. ACM was not found due in part to the age of the building. And other environmental concerns were adequately addressed minimum.
To perform selective demolition services, UWC demolition teams moved many of its fleet expansion. Heavy equipment mobilized to the site includes several Caterpillar excavators with demolition attachments (shears, grapples), skid steer loaders with bucket attachments demolition, several lifts and a crane. A team of ten Demolition experienced employees, including workers, foremen, site supervisor and site safety officer moved too.
UWC used demolition surgical techniques to cut the damaged sections of the engineering sections of the customer believes that structurally sound. This was achieved using a coordinated effort between the manual and machine demolition techniques. Workers in manlifts with torches first isolated the fire damaged portions of the structural sections by cutting away the torch beams and structural elements to isolate the zones. Once the areas were separated, excavators and faces scissors were used to carefully remove the section of each bay. In the damaged sections and bays of the deposit facility were systematically demolished in this manner until all the fire-damaged areas were demolished.
After this first phase of work, the customer engineer became more structural analysis of the remaining sections and bays of the building. The client determined that it would be cheaper to demolish the remaining sections of the construction and reconstruction then try to repair and modification for the installation of a backup source.
The client contacted UWC to come back and demolish the rest of 700,000 square feet of permanent facilities. Demolition went to the top of the concrete slab. CMU was able to offset a substantial amount of demolition costs with the salvage value of scrap metal. With its extensive business relationships in the scrap recycling industry, CMU was able to get the best price of the junk that helped the client with the cost of the demolition of the budget.
UWC used the following equipment and skilled manpower for this project from demolition
• An excavator Caterpillar 330L with a hydraulic hammer attachment
• A Caterpillar 330 Excavator with LaBounty Grapple attachment
• An excavator Caterpillar 350 with LaBounty MSD 100 cutting attachment
• A Caterpillar 345 excavator with rotating cutting LaBounty 3000
• A hydraulic crane 110
• Bobcat Skid 773 deal with the demo
• Bobcat 773 Skid Steer with a hammer attachment
• Miscellaneous support equipment
• 8 employees consisting of operators and workers
From beginning to end, work was completed in four months without incident or injury.
